A Flowering Legacy

When a former RAF pilot Keith Owen found out in 2007 that he had terminal
cancer he decided to create a legacy which would delight people for
generations to come. Alongside a generous donation to conservation in
the Sidmouth area, his instructions to ‘think big and plant a
million bulbs’ has resulted in a spring display which attracts
visitors from far and wide.

It’s a story which we have shared before. But it is also a story which
comes to mind every spring as a strong reminder of how thoughtful
planning can reap long term rewards. It’s also an illustration of
the importance of looking beyond the immediate present and
understanding how choices made now could impact future outcomes. This
is an area which we consider deeply when we make investment planning
recommendations. Whether investing in a pension with the aim of
creating financial security in later life or, perhaps, using an
investment vehicle to reduce inheritance tax liabilities; the
decisions made now can have lasting implications.
