Christmas Needn’t be Taxing
Whispering silently, the snow falls across the Devon countryside bringing with
it thoughts of a Christmas break filled with long walks in the
countryside, roasting chestnuts by the fire and making merry with
family and friends. Sadly, for many, that filmmakers dream of a
perfect Christmas is just that, a dream. And in an increasingly
crowded world, Christmas nowadays may simply give us a chance to
catch our breath and start to deal with an ever-increasing ‘to do’
list.
Perhaps that’s why in 2021 more than 31,000 people saw the time between
Christmas Eve and Boxing Day as the perfect opportunity to submit
their annual tax returns with just short of three thousand returns
being submitted in the hour before noon on Christmas Eve. Now the
deadline for submitting returns and paying tax for the previous tax
year is 31st
January and for some reason January does tend to fly by. So perhaps
those who filed over Christmas were merely doing so in order to avoid
filing late.
But with a little preparation, tax return filing need not be so onerous
with, for most, the same type of information being required every
year. In fact, many people will find that there is no reason not to
submit a return in the summer, freeing up Christmas time for friends
and family. Those whose circumstances have changed can quickly check
if they need to submit a tax return by looking at the government website. If you do need to submit a return for the first
time, then don’t leave it too late as you may need to set up a tax
account and that can take time.
However you plan to spend your Christmas may we all wish you a very happy
holiday and a peaceful New Year.
