The Tax Return Countdown
Thousands of people now see filing their tax returns as part of their Christmas tradition. Or at least that’s what HMRC say as they revealed that more than 31,000 people filed their returns between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day.
Of course, announcements such as these do have a purpose. HMRC want to encourage everyone who has yet to file a return to do so as soon as possible rather than wait until the end of January. This is particularly important for those who may be filing a return for the first time as they will have to undertake a registration process which involves HMRC sending a Unique Taxpayer Reference in the post followed by an activation code also by post.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Director General for Customer Services, said: “Filling in a tax return won’t have been on many people’s to-do lists for Christmas, but please don’t leave it until the end of January either. We have videos, guidance and helpsheets to support you – just search ‘Self Assessment’ on GOV.UK to find out more.”
