Spotting Suspicious Texts and Emails
As well as reporting on pension and investment news, from time to time we share stories about potential frauds and scams in order to help to boost awareness. Advice such as ‘if it looks too good to be true it probably is’ can help people to think before they hand their money over to fraudsters. In the same vein, ‘think before you click on a link’ might just save computers or phones from being opened up to scammers.
But how do you know what is a potentially fraudulent text or email? Scammers are getting more sophisticated and that can make the scam harder to spot. One way to check is to forward suspicious emails to the Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS) which was launched by the National Cyber Security Centre in 2020. This automated service scans for suspicious links within the email. Since its launch almost twenty-one million reports have been made, resulting in the removal of over 235,000 malicious websites.
Similarly, suspicious text messages can be forwarded to the phone number 7726. To date, reports to this service have resulted in over fifty thousand text message scams being stopped in their tracks.
If you are looking for advice on investments, or if your situation has changed and you may therefore need to review your existing pensions or investments, contact Beckworth by using one of the links on our website.
