A Very British ISA?

The Spring Budget takes place on Wednesday 6th March and, as usual, the rumour mill is already winding up. One early candidate for inclusion comes from The Chancellor himself. Talking to a group of city bosses Jeremy Hunt declined to give a direct answer to whether a British ISA was being considered as part of the Budget mix. However, he went on to comment: “Do I want to do things that mean that more UK capital is invested in our most promising companies? Absolutely. I think that something like a British ISA could be very good at that.”

The idea of a British ISA was also raised before the 2023 Autumn statement so whether it is on the way or not is up for debate. If it does come to fruition, it will be interesting to see whether a British ISA comes with any favourable terms or becomes just another ISA offering. And on a cautionary note, some investment analysts have raised a concern that prioritising investments in British companies could lead to an unbalanced investment portfolio.

Whilst we wait to see what the Budget will bring it is worth noting that there are less than two months left in the financial year for those who intend to maximise their current ISA allowance but have yet to do so to finalise their investments.
