Lest We Forget
As Independent Financial Advisers naturally the majority of the news which we share on our website relates to investments, including ISAs, and pensions. However, occasionally a story relating to Devon, and Exeter in particular, catches our eye.
This was certainly the case with Exeter City Council’s announcement about its plans to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day on 6th June. As will no doubt be the case in many cities, the council has organised a number of events including a service, a parade and the lighting of a D-Day beacon.
However, as the council highlighted in its announcement, Exeter also has an extra reason to remember this anniversary. That’s because Exeter’s bridges played a key part in preparations for D-Day. The Countess Wear road and swing bridges over the Exeter canal so closely resembled bridges over the River Orne in Normandy that they were used to train troops in advance of the D-Day landings; no doubt helping to reduce casualties.
A heritage stone was placed beside the bridges in 1994 with an information board added in 2021. Now as part of the commemoration Exeter City Council is to unveil an interpretation board which will provide more information on the key part which these Exeter bridges played in the D-Day landings.
